Current state of affairs

Implementation of the North European gas pipeline project has begun.

Analysis of the existing pipeline systems in the NEGP-affected areas in the Vologda Region and calculations of expected gas consumption in the North-Western region of the Russian Federation considering NEGP construction have been completed. Preliminary variant of a transport scheme to support NEGP construction has been developed, analyzed and approved by the regional government. 85% of engineering survey for the linear pipeline section has been completed, and 63%, for sections along the route. It is expected that the entire research will be completed in the third quarter of 2005. The Leningrad Region has developed a technological scheme for the pipeline, completed the collection of data on its linear section and all compressor station areas and started engineering research of sites along the NEGP route.

Gazprom has started developing the Yuzhno-Russkoye deposit, which will supply most of gas for the NEGP. Seismic research and drilling have started in the Yuzhno-Russkoye gas field. Estimated proved reserves of the deposit exceed 700 bcm.

On 8 September, 2005, in Berlin OAO Gazprom, BASF AG and E.ON AG signed a basic agreement on the construction of the North European Gas Pipeline (NEGP) through the Baltic Sea. The parties to the agreement intend to set up the North European Gas Pipeline Company as a joint German-Russian venture, with Gazprom holding 51 % and BASF and E.ON each 24.5 %.
